North East to be hit by thunderstorms after heatwave as weather warning issued

The North East is set to be hit by thunderstorms following this week's heatwave.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunder in the region, with the storms potentially causing disruption and flooding in a number of areas.

The warning covers the whole region and will be in place from midday on Friday to about 6am on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out on Friday afternoon and evening.

"Many places will miss the storms, but where they do occur, torrential downpours could bring 30-50mm rain in a hour, with hail and lightning.

"The storms will slowly clear northeastwards on Friday night, perhaps not clearing northeast Scotland until Saturday morning."

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

Outlook for the weekend

Warm and sunny on Friday but some isolated thundery showers later, perhaps torrential.

Cooler, breezy and changeable on Saturday, with rain and showers. Sunny spells and scattered showers on Sunday.
