North East to be hit by strong winds as Met Office issues yellow weather warning

People are being warned to expect strong winds on Sunday, with gusts of up to 60mph expected in some parts of the North East.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind, running from midnight on Saturday to 4pm on Sunday and says it could lead to some disruption.

There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, as well as a risk of travel disruption.

Power cuts may also occur, with the potential to affect other services such as mobile phone coverage, and people are also urged to take extra care along the coast where winds are likely to be severe.

Much of the North East will get gusts of between 30mph to 45mph but some parts may experience stronger winds, reaching 50mph to 60mph.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "An area of low pressure is expected to develop over the Atlantic and track eastwards across central Scotland during Sunday with strong winds developing across a large swathe of the UK.

"Gusts of 50mph to 60mph are most likely over and to the east of high ground, particularly the Pennines which may lead to some travel disruption.

"With trees in full leaf, fallen branches and damaged trees may cause some localised travel and power disruption.

"While there is high confidence in the development of the low pressure system, there is the potential for a much deeper system with stronger winds and a risk of severe gales around coasts and through the Central Belt."
