John Spencer, of Sustainable Oakenshaw, said: "We are absolutely delighted, winning this competition has given us the confidence to move forward with our proposals. The idea is to see if we can create a community-owned renewable energy project that would bring an income to the local community that we can continue to invest in improving the area.
"We want to encourage the widest community participation possible. The expertise and support that we will receive will make a significant difference to our aims of exploring and developing a scheme that will not only give the community a say in the generation of clean energy but also provide additional social and environmental benefits."
