North East set to be battered by thunderstorms as Met Office issues weather warning

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in the North East.

The warning will be in place from 1pm on Wednesday until 8pm and affects all areas of the region.

Heavy showers are predicted across northern England and southern Scotland with a chance of power cuts in the region.

Homes could become flooded and there could be travel disruption, the Met Office warns.

The full warning reads: "Heavy, slow moving showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop during Wednesday afternoon."

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
