North East set to bask in sun and high temperatures thanks to 'African plume'

The North East is set to bask in above average temperatures thanks to a plume of African air.

Forecasters say the mercury will hit around 15C by mid-week, though it is expected to be cloudy in parts.

The above average temperatures coincide with the start of official British Summer Time on Saturday night.

High pressure will again be in charge on Tuesday with lots of fine and dry conditions.

There will be a sunny start to the day but cloud will roll into eastern areas from the North Sea during the afternoon.

Parts of the country could be see temperatures reaching 21C due to tropical air from the Azores, compared to the average of 12C normally seen at this time of year.

Clear days could lead to some chilly and frosty nights in places but there should be a real taste of spring for much of the country.

However, there is a risk of more unsettled conditions returning for a spell, according to The Weather Channel.

"We have got some fairly settled conditions this week, bringing warmer temperatures for much of the country," a Met Office spokesperson said.

"High pressure is building across the UK and will bring settled warmer air but there will be cloud build up, with patchy cloud on Tuesday and wall-to-wall cloud on Wednesday."

By the weekend, temperatures may drop down to the low teens.

It comes after the Met Office said February saw a new UK record for the highest average maximum temperature for the month.

The average daily peak was 10C, beating the previous record of 9.8C, which was set in 1998.

The UK was twice as hot as Athens and warmer than Ibiza.

Experts have warned climate change is heating up the whole weather system and making extremes more likely.
