North East set for weekend of 'strong winds and heavy rain' as Met Office issues weather warning

The Met Office has issued a 'yellow weather warning' for hours of gales and rain tomorrow in the North East over the weekend.

A warning is in force from 1pm to 10pm tomorrow and covers coastal areas in southern and eastern England and the weather is likely to consist of heavy persistent rain and gales in our region.

Nationwide delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely, the Met Office warned.

There is also a risk of short-term loss of power, as well as spray or flooding on roads.

The Met Office added: "It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves."

A separate yellow warning for rain has also been issued for northern Scotland and will be in force from 4pm tomorrow until 6am on Sunday.

According to them, the conditions from tonight onwards will be as follows in the North East :

"Increasingly wet and windy through Saturday, with heavy persistent rain possible in the afternoon. Gales likely over hills and on coasts. Wind and rain easing later. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

"Showery on Sunday and Monday, these heavy at times and perhaps thundery. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected in the afternoon and evening, leading to some disruption to travel."
