North East set for more snow as Met Office issues yellow weather warning

The North East is expected to get more snow as forecasters issued a new weather warning.

The Met Office has sent out a yellow warning for snow, lasting until around 2pm on Friday, and says higher areas in County Durham and Northumberland are most likely to be affected.

A spokesperson said: "A mix of rain, sleet and snow will affect northern England for a time today.

"Snow could lead to some disruption for higher routes in the Pennines, Lake District and North York Moors, especially above 250 metres elevation.

"Here a slushy cover of 1cm-2cm may accumulate, but with over 5cm on routes above 450 metres.

"Snow will turn back to rain from the south by mid-afternoon."

Forecasters say this could lead to some travel disruption in the affected areas.

They added: "Some roads and railways are likely to be affected, leading to longer journey times by road, bus and train."

Meanwhile, there is also a yellow warning for wind in place for this weekend.

Storm Jorge will track across the north west of the UK over the weekend bringing another spell of strong winds and heavy rain with the North East expected to experience strong gusts, reaching up to 70mph in some areas.
