North East sees biggest drop in coronavirus mortality rates across England

The North East experienced the sharpest decline in coronavirus mortality rates across England, according to the latest figures.

Data published by the Office for National Statistics showed that the region recorded an estimated 7.2 Covid-19 related deaths per 100,000 population - down from 33.5 in May, the biggest drop in England.

The North West saw the highest mortality rate of all regions in England during June, with an estimated nine deaths per 100,000, down from 27.5 the previous month.

South west England had the lowest Covid-19 mortality rate in June (2.1) and has recorded the lowest rate of any region in England during each of the last four months.

In London the rate fell from 16.2 in May to 3.1 in June, having peaked at 94.7 in April.

The figures, from the Office for National Statistics, are based on all deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate and which had been registered by July 11.

Ashford in Kent was the local authority with the highest mortality rate in June, with a rate of 36.5 deaths per 100,000 people, broadly unchanged on 36.7 in May.

The council area that had recorded the highest rate in May, Hull, saw its rate drop from 51.3 to 18.0 in June.

The new figures came after the Government said on Thursday that 53 more people had died across all settings after testing positive for Covid-19, taking the UK death toll to 45,554.
