North East MPs on Labour deputy Tom Watson's calls for second EU referendum

Labour deputy leader Tom Watson is calling for a second EU referendum before any general election.

In a speech on Wednesday, Mr Watson said a single-issue Brexit election may not break the deadlock in Parliament - something only a second referendum can achieve with certainty.

He also argued that, if a referendum were to follow an election, then Labour should commit "unambiguously and unequivocally" to campaign for Remain.

His latest intervention puts him on a fresh collision course with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has made clear his priority is for an election once Parliament has closed off a no-deal Brexit.

Addressing the TUC in Brighton on Tuesday, Mr Corbyn confirmed an incoming Labour government would hold a new referendum - with Remain and a "credible" option for Leave on the ballot paper - but he has yet to say which he would support.

In his speech to the Creative Industries Federation, Mr Watson said that, while a Brexit election might at the moment seem "inevitable", such single issue campaigns were never desirable.

"Boris Johnson has already conceded that the Brexit crisis can only be solved by the British people," he said.

"But the only way to break the Brexit deadlock once and for all is a public vote in a referendum. A general election could fail to solve Brexit chaos."

Newcastle MPs are also in favour of a referendum.

Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah said: "I know that most people in Newcastle are tired of the Brexit shambles and want it over with. Brexit has poisoned our politics and divided our region.

"The next general election will be about Brexit, unless we have a Brexit vote first.

"I think we need a Brexit vote first so that we can understand what people want on Brexit and then a general election to address all the other issues we face – from climate change to new jobs to the NHS. We won't be able to get past Brexit until the people have spoken again."

Catherine McKinnell, Newcastle North MP, also says Brexit needs to be resolved before any election.

She added: "We need a democratic resolution to the Brexit deadlock that has consumed and divided Parliament and the country for almost three and a half years.

"It has been my view for quite some time that whatever EU withdrawal agreement is agreed to by Parliament must be put back to the British people for a final, binding, confirmatory public vote with a ‘remain’ option on the ballot paper.

"We need to resolve Brexit before any general election is held.

"The risk is that not only will all the vital challenges facing our country - the future of public services like schools, the NHS and social care, public transport and a whole range of other vital concerns, be drowned out by Brexit - but we could also end up with another hung parliament, no further forward, having wasted the time in which the Prime Minister promised to secure a renegotiated deal with the EU to avoid a disastrous no-deal Brexit."
