MPs across the North East have claimed hundreds of thousands of pounds in expenses over the last financial year, according to figures. According to Ipsa (the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority), MPs are set a budget with which they are to “appropriately carry out their parliamentary functions”.
This includes the operating costs of their office including rent and staffing costs. MPs are also permitted to claim for accommodation costs of a second address, such as a residence in London.
They may only claim accommodation costs for one address, which is permitted to be in either the London Area or in the MP’s constituency.
