North East celebrates English Curry Awards success with wins for restaurants, takeaways and a chef of the year

There's plenty cause for celebration in the North East's curry industry as street food restaurants, takeaways and a local chef are named among the winners of The English Curry Awards.

The event, now in its 11th year, recognises the hard work, determination, service and efforts of the country's best curry establishments - and some of those behind their success. Several awards are split into regions to ensure that smaller hidden gems don't go unmissed.

Yasmin Mahmood - director of Oceanic Consulting, the event planner and ethnic awards company which organises the awards - praised the finalists and winners who are representing the nationwide curry industry and helping to enhance its reputation, adding: "Each one of them being a true reflection of the boundless talent in this industry."

Among the 2022 winners is My Delhi in Newcastle which was honoured with a special recognition award while there was success too for a range other street food restaurants, takeaways and chefs across the region, from Northumberland to County Durham. In South Shields, Delhi 6 won outstanding restaurant of the year. The Indian street food favourite, already a multi-award winner, is based in Ocean Road - dubbed the town's 'curry mile' - which is renowned for its top-notch eateries.

Nawaab in Sunderland took the 'takeaway and home delivery of the year' title and the Delaval Tandoori in Whitley Bay won the North East takeaway of the year category.

In a second honour for the coastal town, Whitley Bay 's Shikara was picked out as regional winner of restaurant of the year. For the full list of The English Curry Awards 2022 winners countrywide, which were announced at a ceremony in Birmingham on Monday night, see here.
