North Dublin street artist brightens up the capital with uplifting paintings

A North Dublin street artist is determined to brighten up the capital with his uplifting paintings and stunning murals.

The Rush native feels it is important for the next generation to feel inspired and to see how important celtic art is in Irish culture.

John Fitzsimon's work can be seen all around Dublin's city centre and his own hometown.

He told Dublin Live that street art is the lifeblood of any city.

John said: "It lifts us up.

"Dublin's grey enough with the weather we have.

"The more colour we have- the better."

Like many Dubliners, John is inspired by folk legend Luke Kelly having listened to him growing up.

He painted a mural of 'The Dubliners' hero in Rush in an effort to bring more artwork into the seaside town.

"I actually did that to bring some art into Rush- just to colour up the town.

"There was no real art in town.

"I'm a big Luke Kelly fan- he's the voice of Ireland.

"Everyone needs an inspiration to inspire themselves.

John learned the tricks of the trade from his artist father but feels art is largely based on observing the world around you.

"It's all about looking around.

"The next generation are looking at their phones all the time- it's not the real world."

The 42-year-old's latest creation is a Halloween piece on Baggot Street, ahead of Dublin's spooky season.

John believes that it is vital for the younger generation to realise the importance of art and culture in our society.

"It all ties into one- art, music, drama, film-making...

"It's good for the next generation coming up to influence kids in school.

"Art is always there."
