Dublin City Council has asked the owners of the Bonnington in the northside to reassess their plans to build a seven-storey hotel.
Liffeyfield Limited, which is part of the McGettigan Hotel Group, is hoping to demolish a low-rise convenience store in front of the hotel on Swords road and turn it into a 234-bedroom budget hotel.
Dublin City Council voiced concerns after over 40 objections were lodged against the development with regards to its height and potential for increased traffic, the Irish Times reports.
The Bonnington, which was previously known as the Regency Hotel, came into the public eye after a Kinahan crime gang member David Byrne was shot dead in February 2016.
The owners hope to keep the old hotel and build a new one which will not include any restaurants, bars, or other leisure facilities.
Social Democrats TD Roisin Shortall said the applicant had “very poor record of planning compliance” and feared that the size of the hotel could overshadow the houses in the area.
She added that the development would generate “unacceptable” increased traffic on the road.
The council said that when the proposal was presented at the pre planning stage it was for an extension which included a new single shared reception and direct connections between the existing and proposed building on all the floors.
The council said that it had “significant concerns regarding the lack of physical integration and internal connectivity between the proposed room-only hotel, and the existing full-service hotel on site, and the resulting potential for late night noise, nuisance, and disturbance”.
