North Dublin gym offering free women's self defence classes

A gym in north Dublin is offering free self defence classes for women in the community.

Fyre Gym in Coolmine Industrial Estate, Dublin 15 shared a post on Instagram giving details about the classes.

Taking place over five weeks, the gym is offering one hour sessions from world champion kick boxer Robbie McMenamy, who owns the gym.

Robbie, who works for Dublin Fire Brigade and is based in Blanchardstown Fire Station, decided to introduce the classes after a conversation with his sister.

"Hopefully it will teach people enough to get themselves out of certain situations," he told Dublin Live.

"This happens to be something I'm very experienced in so it's something I can share with other people.

"We just want to help as much as we can."

Robbie revealed that the classes have proven popular already so he is hoping to introduce one for parents on weekends as they might not be able to make it during the week.

He explained that a colleague of his would take the kids into another room for a separate class while Robbie conducts his usual self defence lesson with parents.

"Some people have kids and can't get babysitters, but that shouldn't mean they can't do a self defence class," he said.
