North Coast Coastguard drama as hammer and chisel used to rescue dog stuck down crevice

Coastguard volunteers had to use a hammer and chisel to rescue a dog after it fell down a deep crevice and became lodged between rocks.

The spaniel ended up around five metres down and unable to escape when it went down the hole at Whitepark Bay on Friday morning.

The springer, called Leo, is understood to have been running around on rocks in the area at around 11am before falling into a crack in the ground.

He could be seen from below, but was so tightly wedged into the rocks there was no way for him to escape.

However, according to Coastguard volunteer Ryan Gray, a member of the Newcastle Coastguard team spotted a commotion and called in members of the Coleraine and Ballycastle teams.

He told Belfast Live: “They had to use a hammer and chisel and were at it nearly an hour, but they managed to get him out in the end, so a job well done.”

Video of the rescue shows how one volunteer had to use a high-viz blanket to shield the dog from flying debris while another chipped away at rock to widen the gap and allow the animal to be freed.

In a post on the Coleraine Coastguard Facebook page, they added: “HM Coastguard are responsible for rope rescue along the entire UK coastline. The teams will rescue domestic animals who have fallen to prevent their owners getting into difficulty trying to self-rescue their pets.

“We urge all dog owners to keep their pets on a lead while walking near cliffs. If your pet gets into difficulty, do not attempt a rescue yourself. Call 999 COASTGUARD.”
