Following the 2016 presidential election, North Carolina’s top election official warned the Justice Department that the person who illegally gathered absentee ballots in the state would "likely continue for future elections" if he wasn’t prosecuted, according to documents obtained by the AP.
Why it matters: The same man is allegedly at the center of fraudulent activity that occurred during the 2018 midterm elections and has left North Carolina’s 9th congressional district results hanging in the balance. At the time of the warning, there was only an acting U.S. attorney in office. President Trump’s appointee arrived later in 2017, but did not attempt to prosecute the matter.
