North Bristol Fringe is about to have a year of roadworks

A year of roadworks to improve safety and increase capacity at a roundabout in Stoke Gifford will start next month.

The roads which connect to Stoke Gifford Roundabout - also known as Rabbit Roundabout - will be fully or partially closed for the next 12 months while the work is carried out.

The timing of the schedule of works will overlap with an eight-month full closure of nearby Gipsy Patch Lane due to start in March 2020.

South Gloucestershire Council has said the £2.9million scheme at the roundabout will reduce congestion and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians as well as increasing capacity at the busy junction ahead of thousands of new houses being built in the area.

The roundabout connects Bradley Stoke Way to Great Stoke Way from north to south and is part of the m1 metrobus route. It also has the B4057 Winterbourne Road running through it east to west.

The planned improvements include:

  • increasing all approaches to the roundabout from two lanes to three
  • widening and changes to road markings on the roundabout
  • toucan crossings on each of the four arms of the roundabout, prioritised for pedestrians and cyclists
  • new entry and exit points for cyclists to help them navigate the roundabout with clear traffic signs and road markings
  • widening of shared use cycleways and footways

The main construction phase will begin in January 2020 and is scheduled to take one year to complete.

Site clearance has already been completed and further preparation work is taking place now and is set to be completed before Christmas this year.

Most of the work will be undertaken using narrow lanes and lane closures. Narrow lanes will be operational 24 hours a day.

Between January and April 2020 there will be lane closures and narrow lanes in place on Bradley Stoke Way and B4057 Winterbourne Road.

From May to August lane closures will also be added on Great Stoke Way.

In September there will be lane closures in place still on Great Stoke Way and the B4057 Winterbourne Road

Between October and November next year there will be overnight closures on the roundabout and also some off-peak lane closures up until December on the approaches to it.

What to do if you're stuck in traffic

South Gloucestershire Council has apologised for any inconvenience caused and has said it will do everything to minimise the impact of this work, but journey times will be affected.

Members of the public are invited to a drop-in session later this month to find out more details about the project.

It takes place from 4pm to 6.30pm on Tuesday, December 17 at Baileys Court Activity Centre in Bradley Stoke.
