North Belfast street cordoned off following security alert

An Ardoyne street has been cordoned off as police investigate the discovery of a suspicious object.

Belfast Deputy Mayor Paul McCusker has urged people to avoid the area if they can while some homes were evacuated.

He told Belfast Live the object was "found at the end of Alliance Avenue".

"Police are there and have cordoned the area off," he added.

"The top end of the street has been cordoned off too so I would just ask people to avoid the area.

"Police are investigating at the minute and are waiting on Army technical officers arriving," he continued.

"This is an ongoing situation at the top of Ardoyne and I would encourage people to stay away from the area."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Alliance Avenue in North Belfast is closed in both directions due to a security alert following the discovery of a suspicious object this evening (Friday, April 9th).
