North Ayrshire town 'to be avoided' as A78 hit by 'excessive' flooding

Motorists have been warned to avoid a North Ayrshire town tonight as 'excessive' flooding has closed a stretch of a key route.

The A78 is shut between Kilruskin Farm at Hunterston to Montfode Roundabout at Ardrossan, with the southbound closure taking effect from Largs.

Police say West Kilbride should be avoided for the time being and urged people on the move to check for the latest updates.

Roads crews are working in the area using pumps, gully cleaners and tankers to clear the water.

Heavy rain and snow has affected west-central Scotland all day with the A78 coast road between Ardrossan and Seamill the most badly affected.

The Haylie Brae A760 road remains open at this time, police confirmed, for those heading towards Fairlie, Largs and Skelmorlie.

Amey SW Trunk Roads tweeted this evening: "A78 remains closed from Montfode roundabout to Hunterston roundabout with both carriageway still flooding as water flows from the adjacent field.

"Pumps, gully cleaners and tankers in operation with rainfall predicted to ease into tonight."
