North Ayrshire road closure warning ahead of work to replace key footbridge

A key footbridge in Irvine is set to be removed until April for refurbishment works.

The New Street footbridge – which links Fullarton to the multi-storey car park at the Rivergate Shopping Centre – will be taken down on Thursday, February 25.

Council chiefs say refurbishment works will be carried out off-site to avoid a lengthy road closure.

However, New Street will be closed on February 25 and a further one-day closure is expected in April to reinstate the bridge once works are completed.

Improvements to the access ramps will be done on-site and will begin on Monday, February 22.

A temporary diversion will be in place for pedestrians for the full duration of the works.

North Ayrshire Council say the project will increase safety and access as well as enhance the overall look of the prominent bridge.

Councillor Jim Montgomerie, cabinet member for green new deal and sustainability, said: “These works are essential to ensure the long-term integrity of this key footbridge which links residents in the Fullarton area to the Rivergate and town centre.

“We have carefully planned the works so that they cause as little impact as possible to road users and pedestrians.

“Once complete, the footbridge will be safer and more attractive for decades to come.”
