Norrkopping 2-1 St Pat’s (agg 4-1): Saints bow out of Europe at the first hurdle

The Saints bowed out of the Europa League at the first hurdle despite a battling performance at the Nya Parken last night.

Harry Kenny sent out an unchanged side from the one that lost 2-0 to the Swedish outfit seven days earlier at Richmond Park, and a superb Conor Clifford equaliser in the 71st minute on the night was the highlight for the visitors.

Brendan Clarke also excelled between the posts but Ciaran Kelly was sent off four minutes from the end for a second bookable offence as exciting young striker Jordan Larsson proved too much of a handful again.

The Saints created the first real opening in the ninth minute when Clifford made space on the edge of the area, but he failed to hit the target.

The hosts had an even better chance three minutes later when Larsson was put through but, with Clarke only to beat, he fired wide.

The visitors struck back on the break and Mikey Drennan was close to getting the vital touch to a Gary Show effort.

Clarke was at his best to deny Larsson midway through the half, before also denying Rasmus Lauritsen.

The Saints keeper was kept busy, standing tall to deny a Larsson shot, but Shaw was frustrated to be denied by a brilliant 34th minute save by Isak Pettersson.

And, stung into action, Norrkoping took the lead moments later. Clarke saved from Alexander Fransson but Larsson was on hand to tap in.

Comfortable with a 3-0 aggregate lead, the home side almost added to their advantage on 57 minutes when Simon Thern fed Larsson, who was off-target.

Kelly came close at the other end before Pat’s grabbed a spectacular equaliser from Clifford, who found the top corner with a right foot shot after Norrkoping switched off at a corner.

The visitors pushed for a second and, five minutes later, sub Dean Clarke’s shot was deflected over, but Karl Holmberg finished a clever move in the 85th minute to make it 2-1.

To end the Saints’ first taste of European football in three years on a sour note, Kelly was sent off before the end.
