Norris to coach Qld in Women's Origin

Queensland will defend the State of Origin shield they won last year with a new coach at the helm. (AAP)

Both Queensland and NSW will be coached by females in this year's Women's State of Origin match with Tahnee Norris appointed to the lead the Maroons in 2021.

The former Queensland and Australia representative will pit wits with Kylie Hilder, who was appointed NSW women's coach in February.

Norris replaces Jason Hetherington who was let go by the Queensland Rugby League despite last year's breakthrough win over the Blues - the Maroons' first under the Origin banner.

Capped a record 32 times by the Jillaroos, Norris is Queensland's first female coach since Karen Stuart - who led the Maroons to victory in the interstate clash in 2007.

Since retiring as a player Norris has coached Burleigh to five club premierships.

"I can't wait to take it up and get to work," Norris said.

"Since retiring from footy, it has been a goal of mine to be coaching these girls at this level, and trying to give them the opportunity to succeed and be better athletes."

Norris, who played in four World Cups, will be supported by assistants Aaron Zimmerle and Ben Jeffries.

This year's Origin match is to be played on June 25.
