Norrie v Zverev live: Australian Open latest score and updates as Brit defeated in four sets

Cameron Norrie was beaten in four sets by Alexander Zverev as the British participation in the Australian Open singles came to an end.

Norrie, who succumbed to a 7-5 4-6 6-3 6-1 defeat, has now lost his last seven contests with Zverev who continues his campaign to reach the first major final of the year.

Norrie started the match well and broke in Zverev’s first service game but he couldn’t complete the serve in a tight and closely fought for first set. Zverev claimed it with three games on the bounce but Norrie shrugged off that disppointment to clinch the second set 6-4.

From there, Zverev upped his level as Norrie’s form took a dip. It resulted in a mismatched third set with Norrie chasing the game and twice being broken due to a lack of discipline.

The Brit grew further frustrated as Zverev offered little from his own serve before sweeping to a 6-1 victory in the fourth meaning he advances to the next round.

Sabalenka reacts to victory over Potapova

08:16 , Mike Jones

The women’s world number one defeated Anastasia Potapova today.

Following her win she said: "Aryna five years ago would be focusing too much on the way she feels and completely lose these matches.

"I learned that it doesn't really matter how you feel, it's all about your mentality, your mental strength to be there, try your best, return the ball ugly with terrible technique and your body being completely disconnected.

"When you see that things are not working, the only tactic you have is to fight.

"I'm super happy with my mentality today. I think it was the only thing that really helped me get the win. It was one of those days you have to fight to try and get the ball back.

"Emotionally I was all over the place. I was trying to figure out how to connect my body.

"It seemed like everything was working separately; my brain was somewhere else, my arms were going one direction. Magically, I was able to get this win."

Meet the ‘dogs of war’ taking over the Australian Open

07:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Ben Shelton licked his lips as he prepared for another battle. The eighth seed at the Australian Open and his third-round opponent, Valentin Vacherot, have both come a long way since their paths crossed in the semi-finals of the Southeastern Conference men’s tennis tournament in April 2021, as Shelton’s Florida progressed past Vacherot’s Texas A&M at the Billingsley Tennis Centre in Arkansas.

But the road they have both taken, from the NCCA college system to Masters champions on the ATP Tour, has been one of the defining aspects of the first week of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

More from Norrie

07:40 , Mike Jones

Of his match with Zverev the Brit added: “I think I can trouble him, for sure. I'm going to have to really play a complete match and play well for four hours to have a chance with him. I really can take a lot of confidence from the first three weeks of the year, how I'm managing my service games, how I'm putting a lot of returns in court.

“I feel like I'm there every single point. I know that's more kind of my trademark, to be there every point. I think I've been doing a really good job with that. I think that's the reason why I won today. My tennis has been there. I've been feeling the ball great. I think mentally I'm feeling in a good place.”

Pre-match thoughts from Cam Norrie

07:35 , Mike Jones

“So excited,” Norrie said about facing Zverev in the Australian Open again.

“He's one of the most consistent players on the tour. I think he loves playing me. Every time we play we have such high-level matches. He always beats me. The last maybe four or five times.

“We always have close sets, close matches. I played him fourth round here, lost 7-6 in the fifth. But he's one of the best competitors out there. I'm excited. I'm feeling good.”

Iva Jovic vs Jasmine Paolini

07:32 , Mike Jones

Jovic is on the brink of the Australian Open fourth round.

She leads 5-3 in the second set and needs just one more game to secure her place in the next round.

It wouldn’t quite be a shock victory but certainly a surprising one if the American can get over the line.

Emma Raducanu’s Australian Open exit leaves one damning conclusion

As Emma Raducanu acknowledged, winning the US Open as an 18-year-old qualifier was always going to set an extremely unfair level of expectations for an inexperienced player so early on in their career, with so much still to learn.

But, four-and-a-half years after that night in New York, the British No 1 admitted the attempts to develop her game have not worked, that it’s time to take a step back, “re-evaluate”, and perhaps play more like she did when she was younger.

07:00 , Mike Jones

“I'm excited to play against him. I think it's nice being the underdog again,” Cameron Norrie said ahead of this match.

“To go and play him, nothing to lose. I want to take it to him, just rest up, get to hopefully enjoy another amazing atmosphere like I did today.

“I think I can trouble him. I'm going to have to really play complete match and play well for four hours I think to have a chance with him.”

Friday's biggest clashes

06:36 , Mike Jones

Home favourite Alex de Minaur faces a blockbuster third-round match against Frances Tiafoe as the third round of the Australian Open begins.

Sixth seed De Minaur will take to the night session of the Rod Laver Arena against the popular American Tiafoe, a former US Open semi-finalist.

Another big-name clash on Friday is the meeting of third seed Alexander Zverev and Cameron Norrie, who is again the last Briton left standing in the draw.

Carlos Alcaraz faces his biggest test of the tournament yet against tricky 32nd seed Corentin Moutet, as the world No 1 looks to match Jannik Sinner’s rapid progression through the tournament.

Aryna Sabalenka has also cruised through the early rounds and meets Anastasia Potapova, the conqueror of Emma Raducanu.

Thursday saw another record win for the 40-year-old wildcard Stan Wawrinka, as well as a frosty handshake after fierce contest between Naomi Osaka and Sorana Cirstea.

Their most recent meetings came int 2024 when Zverev first defeated Norrie at the Australian Open 7-5 3-6 6-3 4-6 7-6 in a five set thriller which the Brit was unlucky to lose.

Zverev made quicker work of Norrie at Wimbledon later in the same year advancing to the last-16 with a 6-4 6-3 7-5 win on the grass courts.
