Norman Whiteside to auction off football medals and shirts for £140,000

Former Manchester United and Northern Ireland star Norman Whiteside is auctioning off his football memorabilia.

Whiteside is selling the items - which include medals, caps and shirts - to top up his 'small pension'.

The 55-year-old made his debut for United aged just 16, and in 1982 he broke Pele's record of becoming the youngest player to appear in a World Cup aged 17 years and 41 days.

He was also United's youngest ever captain, aged 20.

Unfortunately, Whiteside's career only lasted nine years before he was forced to retire through injury.

A total of 60 lots will be included in the auction, which is being held by Ewbank’s, of Woking, Surrey, on July 29.

The main lot will be Whiteside's FA Cup winner's medal from the 1985 final in which he scored the winning goal against Everton at Wembley.

That item is valued at £15,000, while the shirt he wore in that final is expected to sell for £8,000 and his boots for £5,000.

Whiteside said: “I get a small pension from my footballing days, but we didn’t earn much before the Premier League.

“I want to make sure that all my pension provisions are in place. Also I thought it would be nice for fans to have a chance to bid for something.”

Auctioneer Alastair McCrea said. “It’s the most extraordinary collection that ticks many boxes.”
