Norman Whiteside auctions off football memorabilia for £200,000

An auction featuring some of Norman Whiteside's most iconic football memorabilia has raised £194,680.

Sixty items in total from the former Northern Ireland and Manchester United player's career were sold, including FA Cup winner's medals and memorable old jerseys.

Whiteside debuted for United aged just 16, and in 1982 he broke Pele's record of becoming the youngest player to appear in a World Cup aged 17 years and 41 days.

He was also United's youngest ever captain, aged 20.

Unfortunately, Whiteside's career only lasted nine years before he was forced to retire through injury.

The 55-year-old had been hoping to sell the items for around £140,000 to top up his 'small pension', but the lots far exceeded that estimation.

Wednesday's auction was hosted online by Ewbank’s auctioneers in Surrey, with the 60 lots selling in two hours.

Whiteside’s winner’s medal from the 1985 FA Cup, when he scored in extra-time as Manchester United beat Everton 1-0, raised a staggering £30,000.

The shirt he wore that day also sold for £23,000, almost £20k more than its predicted selling figure.

Other popular lots included Whiteside’s 1983 FA Cup winner’s medal which was auctioned off for £24,000.

Whiteside had previously said: “I get a small pension from my footballing days, but we didn’t earn much before the Premier League.

“I want to make sure that all my pension provisions are in place. Also I thought it would be nice for fans to have a chance to bid for something.”
