‘Normalize being rude’: Maryland woman goes hiking on Billy Goat Trail—then a man on the trail asks her a disturbing question

A Maryland woman and her friend recently went on a hike—but things took a turn when a man joined them on the Billy Goat Trail.

The clip, which has amassed 704,200, is a recording of an off-camera conversation TikToker Alejandra Ramos (@alejandraramos794) had with a man who approached her on the trail with an unusual question.

“What’s the question?” the TikToker asked, seemingly in disbelief.

To which the man replied, “Do you admit that you’re a daddy’s girl?”

Ramos retorted by asking a question of her own: “Why, are you into that or something?”

The man replied saying he was “just conducting a survey.”

“For who?” Ramos shot back.

“It’s a yes and no question, ma’am,” the man retorted.

At this point, the TikToker had had enough. “You’re a freak,” she said. “You’re disgusting. Go to therapy, man.”

In the video description, Ramos added, “Because you’re not going to intimidate ME on a Saturday morning before my hike even starts…and for the record it’s quite the opposite sir.”

Viewers are shocked

Commenters were equally as disgusted.

“Why are social interactions getting so weird with people?” one complained. “Bear spray is almost never for bears…” a second quipped.

A third speculated, “Do they go on hikes on purpose knowing they’ll find women by themselves?”

While a fourth asked incredulously, “Conducting a survey… in… the… woods?

“Normalize being rude or detached when approached by random or strange men,” a fifth advised. “You give them an inch and they’ll take a mile. Cuz why of all people would they need to approach you? They can figure things out for themselves”

Several other commenters asked why Ramos didn’t show his face, but a sixth user specified a good reason for this.

“People always commenting ‘show their face’- if they notice you’re filming them, they will sometimes escalate to stop you recording/get your phone. Recording however you can is a safety method. Avoiding them noticing they’re being recorded is another.”

Ramos didn’t immediately respond to The Mary Sue’s request for comment via TikTok comment.

How common is sexual harassment in hiking?

A post on the r/UKhiking subreddit asked if anyone else had experienced sexual harassment when hiking—and the response was very revealing.

“Low-level harassment like being tracked/stalked/waited for/followed is something that happens to me every couple of months and I’m in my fifties,” one wrote. “God knows what it’s like for younger women.”

“As a solo woman, I prefer a more peopled track precisely because of the risk of harassment,” another shared. “If you’re not seeing us in remote areas, this is why. For me and many women, it’s a frequent occurrence while hiking. Hell, even a hiker I follow on Instagram encountered a naked man right at the end of her solo Cape Wrath trail. She hadn’t seen anyone for days.”

“I hike in remote areas of Scotland, often with women and see some of what goes on first hand,” a third added. “It happens more that I thought it would too.”

While a fourth shared, “I left hiking groups because I discovered that men were not signing up for hikes until they’d perused the list of the women that were going first. I even caught one guy looking over the list with the hike leader, selecting which women he was going to talk to.”
