Normal People viewers 'in shock' as Marianne winces in show's most graphic sex scene

There's no denying that Normal People has got tongues wagging, and last night's raunchy installation was no exception.

Red-faced viewers were left cringing into their closed hands as they caught up on what was arguably the most explicit episode of the phenomenal BBC show so far.

The seventh chapter in the sublime series saw Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal) come together again after their second split.

Returning to Dublin after a summer spent back home in Sligo, Connell meets his true love Marianne for coffee where she informs him of her new relationship and steamy sex life with villain boyfriend Jamie (Fionn O'Shea).

The gripping scene sees a brutally honest Marianne detail her BDSM endeavours with Jamie, who hits and slaps her during sex, to her former flame Connell.

Things soon escalated in the steamy drama as the next clip saw Marianne and Jamie in action as they got down and dirty in the living room in one of the most graphic sex scenes in the entire show.

The intense clip sees Jamie pull his girlfriends hair as they engage in rough sex, while Marianne uncomfortably winces.

Needless to say, viewers who were watching Normal People alongside their parents took to Twitter to share their utter mortification.

While others shared their thoughts - both negative and positive - about the portrayal of Marianne's discomfort during sex.

"I can safely say that sex scene will live on as the most embarrassing moment of my life after watching it with my dad" one humiliated fan quipped.

Another echoed: "That was something I wish I had never seen. I'm in actual shock!".

"Yeah, it was a really bad idea to watch this show with my granny. I see that now" a third remarked.

While a fourth tweeted: "God, that was a hard scene to watch. Marianne looks as though she's wincing. I'm not sure how I feel".

"Okay, I think there might just be too much sex in Normal People. Wasn't expecting this at all" another complained.

From the outset, viewers knew what they were getting themselves in for when it came to the sheer amount of sex scenes in the screen adaption of Sally Rooney's best-selling novel of the same name.

Evidently, this is something to behold, as the Irish made show has already been downloaded over 36 million times.
