Normal People TV series RTE and BBC: Where in Ireland it is filmed, Sally Rooney's novel and reviews

New TV series Normal People hit the screens earlier this week with a massive reaction to the Irish show online.

Commissioned by BBC, the Sally Rooney novel will be shown on RTE on Tuesday nights and BBC on Monday nights.

The first airing, on April 28th on RTE, will be a double bill and give viewers a taste of what's to come in the series.

Here's all you need to know about the show.

What's it about?

It's a love story based on Sally Rooney's novel which follows two teenagers as they weave in and out of each other's romantic lives out in Mayo.

It's going to be a 12 part series and is filled with many highs and lows - it is very close to the version of the story in the bestselling novel.

Where is it filmed?

Tubercurry in County Sligo, which is in the north west of Ireland, served as the filming location for Carricklea.

It is also filmed in Trinity College, Dublin, which is the university the pair both attend.

They also travel further afield to Sweden and Italy, where the crew journeyed to film key scenes in the plot.

Director and executive producer Lenny Abrahamson told the Express that they shot a lot of the exterior filming in Dublin.

He said: "Well we filmed a lot around Dublin for a lot of logistical reasons.

"A lot of it was set in Dublin and then it allowed us to have some of the interiors for Sligo."

"And then we shot a big chunk in Sligo in a town called Tubbercurry.

"It is a lovely location which we used to be Carricklea in the novel."

Who is in it?

24-year-old Kildare native Paul Mescal as Connell and 21-year-old English actress Daisy Edgar-Jones as Marianne are the main characters.

Reviews

Anyone who has been looking forward to this show for some time is not likely to be disappointed - as the reviews have been nothing short of excellent.

The Telegraph gave it five stars saying: "It makes you wish you were 18 again, and  thank God that you’re not, often in  the same moment."

The Guardian also opted for five starts out of five saying: "It’s a triumph in every way, from acting and direction to script, and if we see a better drama – certainly about adolescence, one which takes it seriously without treating it indulgently – this year, I’d be very surprised. It’s a beautiful, hugely beautiful thing."

The novel it's based on

The bestselling novel of the same name was released in 2018 and has been a huge hit across the world - it sold over 60,000 copies in the US in the first few months of its release.

You can still buy the book online or in any book stores (obviously not at the moment though).
