Normal People star Paul Mescal set to play lead role in brand new short film 'Drifting'

Normal People star Paul Mescal is set to star in a brand new Irish film - his first project since the hit drama series.

The Kildare born actor shot to fame in recent months after the instant success of the TV adaption of the Sally Rooney novel.

And now fans are set to get another fix of Ireland’s new heartthrob in a brand new short film ‘Drifting’.

This will be Paul’s first-ever film project, but the in demand star has revealed he is also in talks to get his next movie job in the works once restrictions allow.

Filmed in Longford, the movie was written and directed by Robert Higgins and Patrick McGivney and is set to have its world premiere at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh.

Paul stars as Cian, who lives an erratic life filled with casual hook-ups and booze.

Co-star Dafhyd Flynn stars at his best friend Pat, who has grown tired of his small town surroundings.

The actor was widely praised for his portrayal of Connell. (BBC/Element Pictures/Hulu)

It tells the story of best friends who have been joined at the hip since they were kids and have the run of their small town in the midlands.

The short also stars Lorcan Cranitch, Simone Collins, Jarlath Tivnan and Oisin Robbins.

The movie news comes as Paul looks to have made the trip home to Ireland after months spent on lockdown in London.

The Maynooth man was pictured by his younger sister Nell cuddling their dog, and later on out for a walk on a country road.

In the mean time, proud GAA man Paul has recently credited a piece of advice from an underage football manager for helping to shape his acting career.

He told Filmmaker Magazine: “I had a very important manager in my life, a man called Brian Murphy, who was the first manager I had when I was playing at a higher level, so inter-county football.

“His one piece of advice which has stuck with me to this day is; ‘in preparation the only thing you can control is the controllables.

“I remember hearing that thing from Brian, I was 15, and I was playing with guys who were about 17 and 18.

“I was like ‘how am I going to compete with these guys’ because theyre grown men at that point and I’m a hormonal teenager.

“But I can control certain things and I can ensure that I’m working harder or I’m working to my capacity.

“And that’s something that I think definitely translates into the world of acting."

Drifting will premiere at the 32nd Galway Film Fleadh on Saturday the 11th at 5pm, with tickets available online.
