Normal People star Paul Mescal's fans horrified to see him beaten by boxers on his birthday

Paul Mescal might regret dropping into a boxing club on his birthday – as he was given a pounding in the ring to celebrate his big day.

The Normal People star turned 25-years-old on Tuesday – and is currently in Australia filming a new musical drama called Carmen.

Footage of the Irish native celebrating his big day has surfaced on social media, showing the star take on the role of a human punching bag during an unusual commemoration.

Paul was at Bondi Boxing Club/MTK Sydney in Australia where a group of men lined up to punch him in the boxing ring.

Sharing footage on Instagram, the boxing company wrote: “Happy birthday @paul.mescal”.

But fans of the TV star are clearly lovers rather than fighters – as many were left winching by the footage.

One fan wrote in the comments section of the post” “I am such a wimp. I can’t watch it all the way. Happy Birthday @paul.mescal. I hope you didn’t break anything.”

Another concerned fan gushed: “madre mia...omg what do they do to you to celebrate your anniversary?”

While a further fan suggested: “I think next birthday they should probably just buy you socks…”

Meanwhile, another fan suggested Paul was putting his acting skills to use, suggesting: “Aww he made out each punch was significant even when the weedy one hit him@what a gent!!”

Paul’s new film, Carmen, is based on the 1845 novella of the same name written by Prosper Mérimée.

The book already spawned a stage musical in 2008 adapted by Jack Murphy and the musician Frank Wildhorn.

The film version is being directed by French choreographer Benjamin Millepied – who is the husband of Oscar winning star Natalie Portman.

Paparazzi shots have shown Paul on the beach in Australia filming scenes for the upcoming movie.
