Normal People star Paul Mescal responds on Twitter after being labelled 'British'

Paul Mescal has taken to Twitter to defend his nationality after wrongly being labelled "British".

The Normal People star, who hails from Kildare,  sent a succinct tweet, simply saying: "I'm Irish."

Both Paul, who plays Connell in the hit show and Fleabag and Black Mirror star Andrew Scott received Emmy nominations on Tuesday but some websites across the water labelled the pair "British".

One outlets wrote: "There was a strong showing for British talent including Paul Mescal nominated for Normal People, Dev Patel for Modern Love, Andrew Scott for Black Mirror and Matthew McFadyen for Succession."

This has been updated to say Irish on the various sites but that wasn't before the people of Twitter spotted it.

One fan tweeted: "On what planet is Paul Mescal British? He played GAA with Kildare and his mom was a guard."

Fans were delighted by Paul's simple retort, with one responding: "Any man to walk around wearing o Neil's shorts is definitely Irish."

Another added: "The way people think your British when you play an IRISH character in an IRISH show, and you’re from Kildare, in IRELAND what’s not clicking?"

Another tweeted a famous clip from the Michael Collins movie and Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan also shared her support, tweeting a photo of revolutionary hero Michael Collins, adding: "Tell 'em."
