Normal People's Daisy Edgar-Jones feels lucky to have met Paul Mescal

Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones gushed that she feels lucky to have met her co-star Paul Mescal, describing him as “a friend for life”.

The British star, 22, who is dating Tom Varey added their bond made the intense relationship drama that gripped the world over the past two months easier.

Discussing her relationship with the Kildare native, who plays her on screen lover Connell Waldron, Daisy said:“I feel very lucky to have met Paul through this process. He’s a wonderful, wonderful person and a very giving actor.

“He’ll be a friend for life.

“(We would) get sort of hysterical, usually around five o’clock,” she recalled in the interview with NET-A-PORTER’s digital title Porter.

“Whenever we were doing anything too deep or emotional, we could always have a giggle afterwards.”

Looking back on shooting the controversial sex scenes, she told how she sometimes felt vulnerable and exposed in order to make the scenes realistic enough for fans to believe them.

Comparing the filming to like shooting a fight scene, she explained: ‘You need more protection because it is a stunt, with physical manoeuvres that you need to make look realistic – just like in a fight scene.

“Mentally, it’s a really vulnerable place to put yourself in.”

And despite the worldwide success that has catapulted the pair to stardum throughout the pandemic, Daisy admitted never expected the adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel to become such a TV phenomenon.

“I’m such a cynic that I thought no one would see it!”

“Everyone was at the top of their game.

“It felt like a brilliant team behind it, but Lenny [Abrahamson, one of the directors of Normal People] was saying before, ‘Even if you have the best people and you really make something brilliant, you can give it to the world and no one really cares’.

“So I guess I hoped that my friends and family would like it, but I never really thought beyond that.”
