Normal People: First-look clip released from BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney's best-selling novel

The first clip from the BBC's forthcoming adaptation of Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel Normal People has been released.

In the first-look footage, which can be viewed here, Connell (Paul Mescal) is seen starting to get a sense of Marianne's (Daisy Edgar-Jones) feelings for him.

Rooney's beloved book follows the lives of two teenagers from the west of Ireland who strike up a tumultuous relationship after leaving school.

The screenplay for the TV series was written by Rooney herself, along with Alice Birch and Mark O'Rowe.

The series was directed by Hettie Macdonald (Howards End) and Lenny Abrahamson, the Oscar-nominated director of Room.

When casting was announced, Abrahamson said: “In Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal, I feel I have found two young actors who can vividly capture Marianne and Connell and bring alive the profound and beautiful relationship at the centre of the story.”

Normal People will comprise 12 half-hour episodes. It arrives as a boxset on BBC iPlayer on 26 April, and will air weekly on BBC1 beginning Monday 27 April at 9pm.
