Normal People behind the scenes footage shows Connell's goal in football match didn't go quite to plan

Director Lenny Abrahamson has shared footage of the football match scene in Normal People and it didn't go according to plan immediately.

In the show itself we see Connell, played by Paul Mescal, surge through the middle of the defence and stitch the ball in the top right corner.

But the shooting of the scene didn't all go to plan in one take as the keeper had other ideas, saving the wing forward's first two shots.

Mr Abrahamson tweeted: "Pssst - some rushes from #normalpeople showing the 2 saves the goalie made (first one pretty spectacular) before the take where Connell scores.

"As some speculated, I may have had a quiet word with him in advance of the final, used take... Very fine keeper, tho."

Fans of the show complimented the director on how well he recreated the atmosphere of a small local GAA match in the hit series.

Colm Tobin tweeted: "It was great to see the feeling of being at one of those small Gaelic football matches displayed so accurately on screen Lenny. And that goalie’s surely being scouted as we speak."

And while Mescal struggled to beat the keeper in the clips, he was in fact a very accomplished footballer in his time.

Former Kildare minor boss Brendan Hackett insists Mescal was on the way to becoming their next Glenn Ryan.

Hackett said: "There is no question that he would be a current county footballer, absolutely no question about it. He had the ability and the personality to be very successful as a county footballer."
