Across the UK, families are being forced to cut back ahead of a tough winter.
Fuel bills and the weekly shop were already on the rise – and people across Britain are looking for a helping hand. Instead, last week the economic outlook took a turn for the worse when the Bank of England raised interest rates with a dire warning about the state of the economy.
The double blow of the single biggest hike in rates since 1989 and a two-year-long recession will mean a cold and hungry winter for tens of thousands of Scots as they are left wondering how to pay the bills. It could mean hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs – and their homes.
For others, it will mean hundreds or even thousands of pounds added to mortgage bills.
Twelve years of Tory government has weakened the foundations of our economy leaving us lurching from crisis to crisis with falling living standards and low growth.
Be under no illusions, it was the Tories that crashed our economy and they are going to make you pay the price. It’s worth pausing here for a minute to talk about the man the Tories think will fix this mess – Rishi Sunak.
The Tories can’t pretend he is some fresh-faced injection of new blood in Downing Street, the Prime Minister has been at the heart of their economic chaos for years.
As chancellor, he became a byword for failure – he failed to grow the economy, failed to get a grip on inflation and failed to help families with the Tory cost of living crisis.
He presided over schemes which led to £12billion of Covid fraud and billions more being lost in dodgy PPE contracts.
The rotten politics of dodgy deals that made Boris Johnson a danger to our democracy carry on now that Rishi Sunak is in Downing Street.
Whenever he has faced a difficult decision, he has put the needs of the Conservative Party ahead of the needs of the country.
Just look at the chaos we’ve seen in the wake of the grubby deal he struck with Suella Braverman to stitch up the Tory leadership contest.
Too weak to stand up to the hard right wing of his own party, he cut a deal which has left immigration in the hands of a Home Secretary who is accused of security breaches and whose idea of getting to grips with a problem is flying a military helicopter for a photo op.
All of this matters – because rather than get to grips with the economic crisis they’ve presided over, we have a Government distracted, divided and out to line the pockets of their friends before any general election.
All while the economic crisis they have created and allow to continue makes it harder and harder for your family to make ends meet.
Across the country, people are crying out for change and decency, in their government.
So let’s bring on a general election – and give people a chance to elect a Labour government that will put them first.
