Norad tracks Santa -- and now on Twitter (updated)

The North American Aerospace Defense Command tracks Santa every year from http://www.noradsanta.org/ -- and this year, he's also being tracked on Twitter. Bitz the Twittering Elf currently has 2,150 followers, which is pretty good going. Latest tweet:

The Reindeer are energized! Santa has made it all the way to Yakutsk, Russia. Brrrr, looks cold over there!

Twitter is in the news at the moment, partly because Mike Wilson "tweeted" his plane crash in Denver. (Just afterwards, not during.)

The HubSpot marketing blog, which runs Twitter Grader, has just published its first short State of the Twittersphere Report. It estimates that 5-10,000 new accounts are being opened each day, and that 70% of Twitter users joined this year. TechCrunch has a summary.

I'm a newbie on Twitter, having signed up last week as jackschofield, and I've written about it for Monday's Netbytes column. If you need a 500-word catch-up, that does the job.

Update: Too late when I saw it, but Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land posted the much more comprehensive 8 Santa Trackers For Christmas Eve 2008, From NORAD Santa To Twitter. This included Google Earth: Track Santa In 3D.
