Noosa locals angry at tourists' disregard for Queensland's mask-wearing mandate

A long-time Noosa local is angry tourists are avoiding wearing masks, despite the ongoing Queensland Health mask mandate.

Bill Watson, commonly known as Hey Bill on the beach, has been a mainstay on the Noosa main beach for the past 50 years selling drinks to beachgoers. 

In his estimation, the majority of people around Noosa were not wearing masks.

"There is only a small percentage, about 10 per cent, that are wearing masks."

Mr Watson said people were more prepared to wear masks in last year's mandated periods.

"But this year the majority of people aren't even wearing them," he said.

The local icon said the offenders were all tourists.

"[The locals] are doing the right thing, but mainly it's our holidaymakers that are not."

He said it was frustrating to see visitors putting his community at risk.

"We're trying to do the right thing, but they just don't care.

"They think they are out in the bush."

Penalty for no mask rises

Deputy Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said police handed out 235 masks on Sunday to every person not wearing one in public.

"So the reminder for everyone is, not only wear the mask, but please make sure you carry it," Deputy Commissioner Gollschewski said.

Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said having the mask hooked under your chin, was not wearing the mask correctly.

"It is not going to help you, it's not going to keep other people safe, and it's not going to keep you safe," she said.
