Noodles recalled by the Food Safety Authority over the presence of pesticide that could cause 'serious' health issues

A batch of a popular noodle brand has been recalled by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland due to the presence of an unauthorised pesticide.

Ethylene Oxide was found in the batch, which was made in Thailand and has a best before date of July 20, 2022.

'Lucky Me! Instant Pancit Canton' noodles in the original flavour have been recalled due to the presence of the unauthorised pesticide Ethylene Oxide.

The pesticide, also known as Oxirane, can be used as a fumigant to control fungi and bacteria growth in dry food products, according to European Union. It is not authorised to be used in foods in the European Union.

Ethylene Oxide does not necessarily pose a big threat to human health, but extensive use of the pesticide can cause problems. These issues can range from minor to serious.

The affected batch has a best before date of July 20, 2022.

A statement issued by the Food Safety Authority along with the recall said: “The above batch of Lucky Me! Instant Pancit Canton Noodles Original Flavour is being recalled due to the presence of the unauthorised pesticide ethylene oxide.

“This pesticide is not authorised for use in foods sold in the EU.

“Although the consumption of the contaminated product does not pose an acute risk to health, there may be health issues if there is continued consumption of ethylene oxide over a long period of time.

“Therefore, exposure to this substance needs to be minimised. Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batch.”

The noodles are available to purchase in Ireland.
