England boss Gareth Southgate named his first England lineup for Euro 2020 on Sunday afternoon ahead of the Three Lions’ first game of the tournament.
He bore the brunt of Chelsea supporters’ frustrations though as he left Blues' left-back Ben Chilwell out of his squad.
The Three Lions took on Croatia at Wembley Stadium, with a number of the regular names included in the starting line-up for the clash.
However, there was some surprise at the team sheet with 14-cap Chilwell not only left out of the starting XI but also the squad in general.
Instead, Atletico Madrid fullback Kieran Trippier was selected in his place in an unfamiliar position.
It remains to be seen whether his omission was down to injury or a tactical decision, but neither would have been a viable consolation to Chilwell.
Chelsea fans were also understandably frustrated at the England boss’ selection and took to Twitter to express their feelings.
Chilwell will hope to fire himself back into contention for England’s next two group games of the tournament as they attempt to plot a route through to the knockout rounds.
Following the game against Croatia, the Three Lions tackle Scotland at Wembley Stadium before then facing the Czech Republic in the final group game once again on home soil.
Elsewhere, Jadon Sancho was also left out of the squad entirely in what was another strange decision, albeit with the Borussia Dortmund man having recently suffered with injury so his omission potentially makes more sense than Chilwell’s place on the sidelines.
