"None of that Maldini rubbish" - Ex-Liverpool coach picks Andy Robertson in dream XI

Andy Robertson is arguably the best left-back in world football at the moment but even his staunchest of supporters would find it hard to argue that he's better than legendary AC Milan and Italy Paolo Maldini.

But that hasn't stopped former Liverpool coach Steve Clarke remaining loyal to his Scotland captain when helping kids from Team United pick an, admittedly biased, best Euros team of the past three decades.

Ahead of this summer's European Championships, youngsters from the Edinburgh-based club, which supports young people with autism and helps them overcome social barriers they face in sport and physical activity, have been selecting their best XI from the past 30 years of the tournament.

Their final choices are forming part of a newly-installed European Legends gallery at the Scottish Football Museum, with the likes of Maldini and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard both in the mix for places in their final chosen line-up.

However, Clarke, who served as Kenny Dalglish 's assistant manager at Anfield between 2011 and 2012, felt rather differently when surprising the Team United youngsters on Zoom, as he cheekily queried why none of his Scotland players had been included.

First asking why John McGinn had been picked over Gerrard, he was then adamant that Tartan Army captain Robertson should be included despite the fact he is yet to play at the European Championships.

“It has to be Andy Robertson or Kieran Tierney," he said when discussing who should play left-back. "None of that Maldini rubbish!”

Robertson is set to captain Scotland at EURO 2020 this summer with Clarke's side facing England, Czech Republic and Croatia in the group-stages as they compete at an international tournament for the first time since the 1998 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Glasgow is currently scheduled to act as one of the host cities, though, amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, UEFA are yet to make a final decision whether the pan-country tournament will go ahead in its original planned format.
