‘None of my brides and grooms that did that are still together’: Wedding planner says this common tradition at weddings can reveal whether couple will divorce

In the U.S., almost 50% of marriages end in divorce—and wedding planner Birdie (@birdie1216) knows exactly why. In a viral video, which has amassed 2.4 million views, she shared how she can tell when a couple will divorce “before they even get married.”

The TikToker breaks down three likely factors

“So I’ve planned like 100 weddings, and probably like 25-30 proposals. There are certain things that happen that I’ve seen time and time again with my brides and grooms that have divorced later on,” she explained. “So the first thing is smashing cake in each other’s faces. If you smash cake, I don’t know what it represents, but for some reason, none of my brides and grooms that did that are still together.”

Indeed, in one viral TikTok, a wife divorced her husband after he unexpectedly followed the cake-smashing tradition. I only provided further evidence of this. Although there’s a possibility that this video might have been staged.

Nonetheless, according to Birdie, the other reasons why a couple might end up divorcing reflect more of a “pattern.” For example, if the bride or groom is not respectful of the budget and tries to add things like flowers behind the other’s back, this is another surefire sign of divorce.

“If your mother or the groom’s mother, the bride’s mother, whichever one it is, if that mother’s overstepping where she shouldn’t, and her child doesn’t check her, it usually leads to problems in the marriage,” Birdie adds.

The last, and arguably the biggest reason, is a husband who just “doesn’t care” about the wedding. “And I don’t mean like, ‘Oh, honey, it’s your big day. You pick whatever flowers you want,'” she added. ” I mean, his one job was to pick the DJ, and we’re a week before the wedding, and he hasn’t gotten that done. That husband is completely checked out.”

“So these are signs that they’re more focused on the big day, rather than the marriage itself,” she concludes.

Birdie didn’t immediately respond to The Mary Sue’s request for comment via TikTok comment and email.

Fellow wedding workers related

In the comments, one user agreed that the cake tradition is divorce-worthy, claiming that it “represents disrespect.”

A second commenter shared their own divorce sign. They wrote, “My go-to sign is when the Maid of Honor speech doesn’t even mention the groom. When she just talks about her friendship with the bride. You can tell she hates the guy and knows allllll the things lol.”

Other wedding workers, including officiants and venue workers, claimed in the comments that they could predict divorces too. A make-up artist claimed, “I used to do makeup for weddings, and I could often tell if the marriage wouldn’t last. When a bride spoke to the groom with constant disrespect, those relationships rarely survived.”

“Ladies, treat your men with respect,” they added. “They are partners, not children.”

What color is banned from weddings?

Birdie isn’t the only wedding expert to share their expertise. Recently, wedding photographer Carly Forrest (@carlyforrestphotography) also went viral after sharing the one color you should avoid wearing on someone’s wedding day.

“Stop wearing butter yellow to weddings,” she said. “Stop. I know that it’s the color of the summer, and that everyone loves it, and you can wear it anywhere else you want. It is too close to white.”
