A non-verbal child with autism is reported to have been left alone on a yellow bus for hours.
It is understood the eight-year-old had been picked up to go to a summer scheme at Arvalee School and Resource Centre on Tuesday.
But they were later discovered inside the vehicle at the Education Authority depot in Killyclogher, Co Tyrone by a passerby.
Alliance Omagh councillor Stephen Donnelly has called for urgent answers on what he has described as a “serious child protection issue”.
He said: “This amounts to careless neglect.
“The parents of the child affected have every right to be angry.
“How was it possible for an eight-year-old child to be left abandoned for such a long period of time and who was in the position of responsibility that allowed this to happen?
“I have asked the Education Authority for answers.
“I know they have said they’re investigating but I urge them to do so swiftly and robustly so we can ascertain the full details of how this occurred.
“It is essential lessons are learned from this and that we do not see further such mistakes in future.”
A spokesperson for the Education Authority (EA) said: "The safety and wellbeing of all pupils is EA’s primary concern.
"EA can confirm that it is currently investigating a transport related incident involving a pupil attending a summer scheme at Arvalee School and Resource Centre, Omagh.
"The outcome of the investigation will determine what additional measures are required to protect our children and young people with special educational needs while being transported.
"As this matter is under investigation no further comment can be made as it may be prejudicial to the process."
