Non-league talent makes the step up to sign for Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers have completed a hat-trick of summer signings with the arrival of defender Josh Hare from Eastleigh.

Hare has signed for the Gas on a free transfer after one season at Ten Acres in which he established himself as one of the best defenders outside of the Football League.

The 24-year-old, who can play right-back or in the centre of defence, scored five goals and added six assists in 43 appearances for Eastleigh earning a place in the National League Team of the Season.

He joins Mark Little and centre-back Tom Davies as new faces at the Mem as manager Graham Coughlan rebuilds and remoulds his squad in his image.

"Josh has made real progress over the last three years in his development and climbing up the football pyramid," Gas manager Coughlan said.

"He had a great season with Eastleigh, reaching the play-off semi-finals and being named in the National League Team of the Year.

"We are confident he is ready to take the step into the Football League and we are sure he will add healthy competition to the squad."

Hare is the nephew of legendary Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler and came through the ranks at Priestfield before spells at Eastbourne Borough and Maidstone.

Rovers have now added two right-backs this summer with former Bristol City full-back Little also signing from Bolton Wanderers last week.

Coughlan's first choice right-back during the 2018/19 campaigna, James Clarke, signed for Walsall while Daniel Leadbitter was released on a free and utility man Joe Partington is still mulling over the offer of a new contract.

Hare is considered the more attacking of Rovers' new full-backs, buying into Coughlan's desire for more pace and width in his team.
