Non league goalkeeper scores from edge of his own box to help side edge 11-goal thriller

Goalkeeper Marc Fisher joked he's in the hunt for the Golden Boot after scoring a stunner from the edge of his own box last night to help Dalry Thistle edge an 11-goal thriller against St Roch's.

The sensational 80-yard strike gave the 24-year-old his first ever goal on a crazy night that saw Thistle sneak a 6-5 win after threatening to blow a 5-0 lead.

Fisher  admitted he was so shocked to hit the back of the net he didn't even know how to celebrate.

The modest keeper insisted the goal owed more to luck than skill.  And he reckons it helped spare him a rollicking from boss Gavin Friels after shipping so many at the other end.

"I don't think I've ever experienced a night like that in Junior football", said the former Kilwinning Rangers and Annbank United keeper, "It was mental.

"It was one of those nights where the wind played a big part.

"I just remember running out to clear a through ball and then watching it sail into the back of the net.

"I'd love to say I meant it but it was definitely wind assisted.

"It was a shock to the system when it went in. I didn't know what to do with myself or how to celebrate.

"The joke in the dressing room afterwards was that I'm in the running for the golden boot now.

"I've been on holiday so this was my first competitive game of the season. It's not a bad start!

"To be honest though, I felt I was to blame for a couple of the goals we conceded on the night, so it was nice to pay the boys back with a goal.

"Just to get the three points was the most important thing though.

"The gaffer is animated at the best of times so you can imagine what he was like when it looked like we were throwing away a five goal lead.

"I don't think he would have been bothered about my goal if we'd lost that game, put it that way."
