Non-League clubs forced to wait on crucial postponements decision

A number of non-League clubs who have had their seasons paused as a result of the latest lockdown believe that it could be another month before a decision is reached over whether their campaigns will restart or be made null and void.

Clubs from below National League level only received a Football Association survey relating to the next steps last weekend and have been told the deliberation process may take another month to reach its conclusion, much to the annoyance of some teams asking for a speedier resolution despite fixtures being suspended until March 6 at the earliest.

The Isthmian League is among a number of league proposing the null and void option but the decision will be made by the FA Council once surveys have been submitted.

The questionnaire contains a number of alternative solutions alternative options including playing teams only once or to merge last season’s expunged results with teams' 2020/21 campaign.

There is also a growing split between teams over the options being presented to them, with a clear divide between those at the top and bottom of league tables.

One board member at a non-League club in London said that they will be asking for their campaign to restart or be decided on a points-per-game basis but admitted that if they were lower down their league table that stance would have been different. A manager of another team in South London wants the season to restart and run into the summer.

A number of clubs, including Folkestone Invicta and Whitstable Town, have already publicly stated their desire to scrap the campaign and start from scratch in the autumn.

Playing games behind closed doors has also proven more expensive for clubs than not playing at all and there is a preference from some quarters for games to be paused until supporters are allowed to return safely.
