Sam Smith has revealed they believe that they will be misgendered by fans throughout their lifetime.
The singer, 27, who came out as non-binary last year, told fans at the time: "I've decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM after a lifetime of being at war with my gender, I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out..."
But the star recently admitted to Zane Lowe on Apple Music's Beats 1 that they know that fans will never get their gender pronouns right.
Sam said: "What's hard is people changing their vocabulary; that's very, very difficult. It takes time. Everyone messes up. I'm going to be misgendered to the day I die."
They added: "This is going to take a long, long time for people to not use gender in their vocabulary."

It comes after they branded Valentine's Day "offensive" and compared the romantic holiday to a funeral.
Sam lashed out at the most loved-up day of the year as they revealed the reason behind their hatred is always being single.
During a chat on Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp, Sam admitted they wanted to "destroy" Valentine's Day.

They said: "It's my twenty seventh year of being single on Valentine's Day. I'm over it. It's offensive. Yeah I'm sad today. Today's a sad day. It's more like a funeral."
Over on Heart Breakfast with Jamie and Amanda, Sam added: "Look I don’t want to be a Debbie downer but this isn’t my favourite day. I’m quite anti Valentine’s Day."
Jamie chipped in: "Am I right in saying it was invented by the card industry anyway?"
Amanda said: "It was invented by Clintons."
Sam confessed "Exactly. I used to work in Clinton cards, that’s probably why I hate Valentine’s day."
Sam is preparing to release their new album To Die For after it's title track was released on Friday.

"I poured my heart and soul into this song," they wrote on Instagram about the new album.
"So happy To Die For is yours now and I can't express how excited I am to sing this live one day soon. You can watch the official video on YouTube now, I hope you love it xx."
They continued: "I've really set myself free the last two years whilst writing this & I hope you can dance and relate to these stories. It’s all for you, always xx."
