‘Nomadland’ to open in IMAX before premiering simultaneously on Hulu and in select theaters

Movie fans won’t have to travel far to see “Nomadland.”

The Oscar-contending film starring Frances McDormand will be released in select IMAX theaters on Jan. 29, and then premiere in select domestic theaters and on Hulu on Feb. 19, Searchlight Pictures announced Thursday.

The film will also debut at select drive-in theaters on Feb. 19.

Directed and written by Chloé Zhao, “Nomadland” sees McDormand portray a woman who travels around the western United States after losing her job in a struggling economy.

“Nomadland” earned rave reviews at festivals throughout 2020, winning top honors at both the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.

It is considered an Academy Awards favorite in categories including best picture, best actress for McDormand and best director for Zhao.

McDormand is already a two-time Oscar recipient, having won best actress for “Fargo” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Montana.”

Earlier this week, “Nomadland” was named best feature at the Gotham International Film Awards.
