Nolan Patrick scores game-winning goal as Flyers beat Oilers in overtime

PHILADELPHIA _ Now, it's a lucky seven.

Nolan Patrick sat disappointed on the Flyers bench at the end of regulation Saturday. He had just missed a solid look on net, leading to overtime against the visiting Oilers.

His teammates, on the other hand, told him to keep his head up. He did, and it worked.

Patrick scored the game-winning goal in overtime, and the Flyers beat the Oilers, 5-4, in a Wells Fargo Center's Saturday matinee. It was the Flyers' seventh straight win.

Those from Edmonton watching hometown favorite Carter Hart in the NHL for the first time saw lots of good as the Flyers' rookie goalie managed 40 saves, including 18 in the first period.

The Flyers also scored a season-high four power-play goals.

Against an Oilers team coming off 10 days rest through the All-Star break, the Flyers used an early power play to strike first. Sean Couturier beat Edmonton goalie Cam Talbot off a pass from Claude Giroux. It was Couturier's 20th goal of the season.

But the Oilers returned to form midway through the period. They outshot the Flyers, 18-7, and scored twice. Top-line winger Ty Rattie beat Hart on a breakaway with 11 minutes, 57 seconds left in the first period, and Connor McDavid nudged a wrist shot past Hart with three defenders draped over him. It was McDavid's 30th goal of the season.

The Oilers' puck control and offensive attack kept humming in the second period, with defenseman Adam Larsson scoring off a nice feed from fellow defenseman Kevin Gravel.

Giroux got the Flyers to within one with a power-play goal in the final minutes of the second period. The Flyers' offense had gained some traction leading up to the goal, and Hart pulled off a handful of impressive saves.

A Flyers power play in the third period led to two goals within a minute. Oilers winger Zack Kassian intercepted a pass and scored, unassisted, on a breakaway for a short-handed goal. But Travis Konecny answered with a rebound about 40 seconds later.

Wayne Simmonds scored the Flyers' fourth power-play goal of the game on a rebound, assisted by Giroux and Jake Voracek to knot things up.

Simmonds and Nolan Patrick each nearly beat Talbot in the final seconds of regulation, but the Oilers held on.

Hart's record improved to 9-5-1. He finished January 6-2-1 with a 2.33 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage over nine appearances. His 283 saves were the highest total in the NHL last month, and he was third in ice time (540:13).

Shayne Gostisbehere returned to the ice after missing the last three games with a lower-body injury. He picked up an assist on Giroux's second-period, power-play goal.

Brandon Manning made his second Wells Fargo Center appearance in as many jerseys since signing with the Chicago Blackhawks in free agency last summer. The defenseman, who played his first six seasons with the Flyers, was traded to the Oilers in late December.
