The Lyric Hammersmith’s revival of classic farce Noises Off will transfer to the West End.
Meera Syal will reprise her leading role in Michael Frayn’s comedy, which will run at the Garrick Theatre from September. Syal’s co-stars Lloyd Owen and Daniel Rigby will also return.
Noises Off is what Frayn calls a “farce from behind”, taking place backstage with a theatre company performing a play called Nothing On. It follows an actress called Dotty Otley (Syal), her co-star and younger lover Garry Lejeune (Rigby) and the play’s director Lloyd Dallas (Owen).
The Standard's four star review says that "every actor is wonderful" in "the funniest farce ever written".
Syal told the Standard that the play is “a love letter to the theatre. You can really see the messy lives and the emotional upheaval that they go through and yet they have to put the mask on to go on stage.”
Jeremy Herrin directs the production, with design by Max Jones. The full cast is yet to be announced.
Noises Off opened earlier this month at the Lyric, 40 years after it premiered there in 1982.
The play has been produced regularly since, and had runs on the West End and Broadway. Michael Caine, Carol Burnett and Christopher Reeve starred in a film version in 1992.
Noises Off will run at the Garrick Theatre from September 27-January 4 2020
