The special task force (west) of the UP police has arrested an alleged robber who had faked his death to evade arrest and started a new gang in Haryana.
Police said that the accused, Nanhe Bawariya, 40, was an active member of Bawariya gang and had committed over a dozen robberies in Greater Noida from 1994 to 2003.
Police said that the father of the accused faked his death in 2003 and had cremated an unidentified body before telling the villagers that it was his son. The body that he had cremated has not been identified yet, officials said.
“However, the accused, in fact, had fled Ghaziabad and then to Haryana to evade arrest. He used a fake name—Raju — and started his own gang. On June 16, he robbed residents of two houses in Khakhonda village of Sonepat in Haryana,” Rajkumar Mishra, deputy superintendent of police, special task force (west), said.
Police said that Nanhe, of Puwari village in Dankaur area of Greater Noida, had killed a woman while robbing her in 2003. While he went absconding following the incident, his father faked his death to save him, the police said.
“It was found that the accused was in regular contact with his family. He was traced to Sonepat area. An armed team of STF launched an operation on Monday night and arrested the accused from his hideout in Kasna area of Greater Noida,” Mishra said.
He said that Nanhe confessed to his role in a number of criminal cases in Haryana as well, while he was hiding from the police.
“The local police was informed about his arrest. He was produced in court and was sent to jail. It was also found that he stayed in Loni area of Ghaziabad with a fake name to evade arrest in 2007 but continued to commit robberies. He is a habitual offender and earns his livelihood by robbing others,” Mishra said.
